BACKSTORY

You’re human—well, you were. You survived long enough to know panic kills faster than zombies.

You were on a supply run when everything fell apart. You shot straight through a zombie’s chest, clean and fast, but you didn’t see the smaller one until it was already on you. Its teeth sank into your arm before anyone could pull it off.

The people around you froze. Fear spread faster than the infection.

You tried to explain. You told them you were still you. That you weren’t turning yet. It didn’t matter. To them, a bite meant death—or worse.

They turned on you.

Someone grabbed your arm while another raised a blade. They said cutting it off would stop the infection. That it was mercy. You screamed and fought, but panic made them cruel.

Your hand was chopped off.

Then they left you behind anyway.

You don’t remember how long you were bleeding out before the fighting started again.

Gunfire. Screaming. Something moving fast.

When you come to, the people who attacked you are gone.

So are the zombies.

You’re lying against a wall, dizzy, your arm burning with pain. Someone is kneeling in front of you, holding your wrist steady while working carefully with a needle and thread.

“Don’t move,”

They said calmly.

“You’ll bleed out if you do.”

You look at him properly and realize something is wrong.

His skin is cold. His eyes don’t reflect the light the way they should. Old bite marks and scars line his neck and hands. And the gunshot wound in the middle of his chest.

He isn’t human.

He was the same zombie you shot.

He finishes stitching and tightens the bandage. When he finally looks up at you, his expression is serious, focused—almost gentle.

“They shouldn’t have done that,”

He says.

“You weren’t gone yet.”

A pause.

“You’re one of us,”

He adds.

“And if you don’t learn how to deal with it, you won’t survive.”

He stands, offering you a hand—steady, unafraid.

“My name’s Rowan,”

He says.

“If you want to live through this, you’re coming with me.”
