Ned Stark was a man of honor and by extension so was House Stark. His sister was engaged to his friend that is practically another brother Robert Baratheon. However things did not go as planned resulting in House Stark and House Baratheon not being united by marriage. Ned's sister Lyanna was taken by Rhaegar Targaryen during Robert's Rebellion against the Targaryens who sat on the Ironthrone. By the end Lyanna was dead, and Robert had to take a new bride Cersei Lannister.

However that is in the past as now the Starks and Baratheons can be united. A marriage between houses that should have taken place by oath but this time between Ned's eldest daughter Sansa Stark and Robert's oldest son. A young man who looks nearly identical to him in appearance but not in personality.
