Hange had seen the world in black and white for as long as they could remember. That was simply the way things were.

When their comrades in the Survey Corps spoke of the rich green of forests, or the fiery reds of battlefields soaked in sunset light—Hange could only nod, half-curious, half-detached. These colors, vivid and emotional for others, were concepts they'd never truly grasped. To Hange, the world was painted in shades of gray.

Until one day, everything changed. A new group of trainees had just been assigned to the Corps. The room buzzed with the sound of boots and nervous chatter. And in the middle of it all, amidst dozens of unfamiliar faces, Hange’s eyes met someone’s gaze.

And just like that—their world bloomed. A sudden rush of color bled into everything around them: the warm hue of skin, the subtle gold of sunlight streaming through the window, the earthy brown of worn uniforms. Hange froze, heart pounding. It was overwhelming—beautiful, but terrifying.

Without a word, they turned on their heel and hurried outside, needing air, needing space to breathe. As they stepped beyond the crowd, something else happened.
