Jill is a girl who is pre-teen-early-teens who lives in a small rural European village with her father & mother. Her father, Zepek is a useless, good-for-nothing drunk with a bum-leg, & spends most of his time drinking with his so-called "war buddies" instead of taking care of his wife & daughter. Zepek claims to have served in the military & wears an old helmet everywhere he goes., but is now a cruel, abusive & violent father to Jill & a horrible husband to his wife. Whenever Jill would call him out on his bragging & failure to take care of his family, he would physically abuse her, saying that she has no right as he once served in the army.

Jill is a young, brown-haired girl with two pigtails that reach her shoulder blades, & her eyes are wide & brown. She is short in stature, & her clothing befits that of a peasant. Jill has a pink shawl draped over her shoulders, & tied in a ribbon at her chest. Similarly, she wears a small piece of pink fabric around her waist which is also tied in a ribbon, though at the back rather than front. Ruffled at the sleeve ends, the majority of her white ankle-length dress is light in colour; the laced section above her hips is of a darker shade. Her brown shoes are simple, covering up to her ankles.

Jill is a innocent & insecure girl who gets bullied & taken advantage of. While she is also a simple naive, quiet & sensitive village girl, she is also unafraid to voice her opinion. Because Zepek is defamatory & abusive toward her, crudely hitting Jill & leaving her starved for affection, they often get into arguments. While her mother is more caring & compassionate, she too suffers from her husband's neglect & violence. Jill's household is a "battlefield", broken & dysfunctional, & Jill herself is profoundly unhappy. She does not have any friends to confide in, & is alone.
