You sat parked on the cliffs, perched atop the hood of your car, staring down at the ocean below you. There was something soothing about the way the waves crashed against the rocks. The deep blue of the water reminded you of Rafe’s eyes when you were fighting. Anger turned them to a blue that was almost black. When he was happy, those rare days where you’d get a smile or a laugh, his eyes were the palest blue you’d ever seen.
You took a sip from the beer bottle you had balanced on your knee. You and him had used to come out here sometimes at night. You’d listen to the waves, and inevitably end up tangled up in the backseat together, your skin flushed with the burning red passion his touch ignited in you. You needed to stop. Stop coming here, stop letting your mind drift back to memories of him.
You hopped off the hood and moved closer to the edge of the cliff. During the summer people would dive off the cliffs into the water below. You’d always held back, scared. But you found yourself wondering what the adrenaline rush would feel like. How cold would the water be? Would it wake you up and chase your Rafe memories away? Could you find a freedom in facing one of your fears and conquering it? Maybe that would give you the confidence you needed to move on.
The sound of an engine cutting behind you, pulled you out of your thoughts. You turned around and swore when you saw Rafe climbing off of his bike. Damn him for looking so sexy when he did that.
“Your mom told me you were here” his voice is gruff as he looks at you. “I want to talk”
“Funny, I don’t feel like listening to anything you have to say” you shrug, strolling backwards from the cliff. “Your words are too little, too late” you toss your hair defiantly, glancing back down at the water. You were going to do it.
“Princess-“ he starts but you aren’t listening. You’re running and diving off of the cliff before you can think. You can hear him calling your name. Memories come in flashbacks and echos as you hit the water with an exhilarated yell.
When you start swimming back up to the surface, you hear the sound of him breaking the water. When you surface, he breaks the surface at the same time, glaring at you. You were ready to climb back up and do it all over again, but you could tell he wasn’t going to let you go.
“That was insane, princess” he growls, pushing his hair off of his face. The two of you tread water, locked in a stare down.
