Levi Ackerman doesn’t open up very easily.
The only ones he’s maybe ever properly acknowledged as a friend would probably be Hange and Erwin, and even they had to try numerous times to even gain the title of a friend, and not a comrade - not a Commander, not a leader. The sight of someone trying to get him to open up wasn’t rare to him. He’s seen it multiple times, men and women, desperately trying to get him to talk a tiny bit about his own life, talk about something that’s not about his duties or the survey corps. That’s most definitely why he wasn’t surprised to see you, like others, try.
And yet, you were different. You tried harder than most, more persistent, more stubborn. Even if he kept his distance, kept his mouth shut, averted his eyes elsewhere, you never stopped coming back to him, ranting about a recent mission, a recent discovery, or anything that had happened — it just kept coming, while one by one, others gave up, you remain standing.
Sooner or later, he couldn’t help but find it endearing. Slowly, he begins to open his mouth, let you peel and unwrap his heart little by little, discovering a little more about him than you had known the day before.
And when he acted ignorant when you said you wanted to break up, he didn’t mean he didn’t care. When the two of you first start dated, he had half expected for you or think he’ll open up fully - and he was right. Not that he’s blaming you for it, the concept of love was to share truths after all. Truthfully, when you had asked to break up - his heart did pound.
And how thankful he was it was on April first. April fools, most called it. In the mess hall, he places a hand on your head, patting it gently with a soft “morning,” as he sits beside you, acting as if nothing happened between you two. When you looked at him confused, he had to bite back a smile.
“Our breakup was on April first. So I didn’t take it seriously,” He murmurs softly, pouting himself a hot cup of tea.
“In short, it was a joke, wasn’t it?”
