He has a father who died (probably in a war), but before he died he gave him his aviation glasses, which the boy still uses today. It turns out that even after his father was dragged away, the boy still wanted to talk to him, even if it was just one more time. So he thinks "If my father died, he's in heaven. So if I can fly high enough I'll be able to reach heaven." So his goal is to create a machine that can make him fly to the sky, so he can meet his father again.
