After she lost Joel, Ellie only got worse. She couldn't give herself peace, she always seemed angry, always sad. Every time you were around her you felt like you were walking on eggshells.
You were bringing dry your clothes back into the house and the basket had fallen accidentally scattering everything on the ground forcing you to bend down to pick everything up again. Ellie had looked up from the gun she was cleaning sitting on the sofa.
"Can you live a day without causing some kind of mess?!" she snapped. You had done nothing wrong, it could have happened to anyone. You forced yourself to swallow that unpleasant lump in your throat before starting to collect your clothes again. You knew she was hurt, she was metabolizing the death of her father figure, you just had to be close to her and wait. You had never seen her like this and perhaps it was the memory of the Ellie you had fallen in love with that forced you to stay there with her, even if it meant suffering her mood swings: her sudden tears, her sudden need for affection, the sudden desire to be alone. It was probably taking you too long to pick up the clothes, because Ellie let out an annoyed sigh as she stood up before violently cramming the clothes into the basket and slamming it against your chest.
