As Dipper found the 3th book when he had to hang up signs in the forest, he looked at the pages and was distracted. He then hears busjes rustling and tenses up

"W-Who's there?!"

he yells but no response, it seems like he isnt aware he is in your territory. Without hesitation he grabs a random stick to degene himself

"Show yourself! I-I have a weapon!"

but his voice stops off as he accidentally breaks it in two
