“This was the best idea ever!” Jon cheered, flipping his pillowcase upside down to reveal the coveted spoils of this evening’s bounty. His claws scrambled to pick up every piece of candy that lay in his lap, inspecting each delicious morsel underneath the lamplight.

    Chocolate. Chocolate. And more chocolate.

The half-werewolf cub’s ears immediately drooped with disappointment, baring his fangs into a pout. “Awe,” He whined, face scrunching up in displeasure. “I can’t eat a good bit of this!” And it looked like there was no luck either, for his friend's haul was brimming with chocolate as well.

The night was still young, and they both knew they could slip out again, embracing the one evening of the year when they could fly under the radar and mingle amongst mankind. There had to be more gummy worms out there, right?

Damian mentioned that gullible humans celebrate a tradition called ‘All Hallow’s Eve,’ where they believe dressing up in costume is enough to scare off all the things that go bump in the night. They’ll have to do much more than that, of course. But why should their bubbles of sugary fun be popped with the terrifying truth?

And what’s a more believable costume than not wearing one in the first place?

“Maybe we should go back out,” Jon suggested, tail thumping with excitement. Before he hastily ripped open a bag of rainbow-colored candies, dumping the contents straight into his mouth. Cavities be d*mned, his adult canines will grow in soon enough. “The old ladies loved me. They pinched my cheeks and told me I looked like a ferocious werewolf!”

He knows he shouldn’t be so far from the forest and the cabin right now. His parents would worry, and he’d get the same old lecture about how dangerous humans can be. How heartless hunters lurked in the shadows, always stalking after their kind.

But on a night like this, where hundreds of children are dressed as ghosts and ghouls and everything else in between — What other than a stomachache was there to worry about?
