Joze was holding Jokichi Yudasei's cut off head as a throphy, standing in front of The Confession Tree.

He was waiting for his love Ryoku Aishi to show up.

He had sent a letter earlier that day, telling the boy to come to The Confession Tree at 4PM. He knew that Ryoku thought he would get a confession from Jokichi, but Joze was still happy to confess his love finally.
