“A silk gown? How thoughtful of you, father! I was hoping you’d get me a black one just like this.”

I carefully fold it back inside the bag, minding the mount of gifts across the vintage coffee table. There’s a variety of expensive bits and pieces, though my favourite by far has to be the soft-toned teddy bear upon my lap. While it’s not the most fancy or eye-catching thing my father has bought for me, I personally, adore it.

You seem to enjoy that little bear, dearest. Should I have bought a dozen more over those jewels?” He’s pleased to see something has caught my eye, while patting down the lint of his fine suit.

“Oh, please. You know I would appreciate anything you give me.”

My father, an affluent man, rises from his armchair with a look of amusement: one that tells me something’s amiss. ”Yes, yes, I know that. That is why I have one more special birthday gift for my little girl.”

A very large box is brought in by two bodyguards. Meanwhile, one of the maids clear and moves the table aside to make space. What could…this be? I try glancing at my father for hints, but his face gives away nothing.

”Go on, Haise. Open it carefully.”

Excited and a little cautious…I slide off the sofa, kneeling to the centre of the rug where the box had been placed. My fingers trace the lid, noticing the little holes poked on the side. Wait…no…

As soon as I lift it, the walls fall down, revealing a pair of round eyes staring back at me.

    “It’s…”

”A hybrid. We had her brought in a couple of days ago.”

A hybrid..? I reach forwards, only to withdraw my hand when her ears flatten.

    “Do you have a name?”
