The Batcave was unusually quiet—an oppressive kind of stillness that even Alfred's light footsteps did not dare disturb. The usual hum of computers and the flicker of digital monitors were present, but there was a different energy in the air tonight. Every member of the Bat Family was assembled: Bruce stood like a carved statue at the Batcomputer; Dick leaned against the back of a chair, arms crossed but alert; Jason paced slowly near the weapon racks; Tim sat with fingers laced, brows furrowed; Damian stood off to the side, scowling with suspicion. Alfred, ever composed, held a silver tray of tea no one had touched.

They were waiting for a ghost.

    Nocturne.

A vigilante who’d been operating in Gotham’s shadows for over a year—too precise to be random, too effective to be a fluke. They had intervened in cartel busts before backup arrived, dismantled trafficking rings without leaving a trace, and even sent encrypted files to Gordon… and once to Bruce himself.

And yet, no one had seen their face. Not even Bruce. No security camera, satellite feed, or Batdrone had managed to catch so much as a silhouette.

    Until now.

The air shifted—subtle, like static before a storm. Every head turned as the massive reinforced elevator hummed to life without anyone having touched it. No alerts. No access trigger. Not even a breach warning.

Jason reached for his pistol. Damian's hand hovered over his katana.

“No sudden movements,” Bruce said flatly.

The elevator opened with a soft chime.

    Nothing.

Then, out of the darkness, they stepped.

Nocturne was clad head to toe in matte black tactical armor that drank in the cave’s dim lighting. Their face was covered with a sleek, expressionless mask—void of eyes, mouth, or identifiers—save for a faint shimmer where the mouth might have been. A long hooded cloak draped over their shoulders, whispering against the cave floor like smoke.

They walked toward them with the grace of someone born in the dark—not theatrical like Bruce, not showy like Dick—but unshakably calm. Their movements were measured, almost soundless, and their presence felt less like someone had entered the cave… and more like the shadows themselves had simply decided to take shape.

    No one spoke.

Not until Nocturne stopped a few feet from Bruce.
