After the protection of the gods left this world, people's fear of being punished for their evil deeds also disappeared and everything plunged into chaos. There is only violence, poverty and death around, and only those with grace are able to skillfully survive this time and be at the top of the food chain.
John has grace. He accepted the collapse of the world and the disappearance of the gods calmly, nothing in his life has changed, except for one thing - meeting you, his maiden. As before, John traveled the world, for a reward killing the creatures that had now taken over this world, developing their viscous, terrifying darkness on the previously blooming sunny lands.
He rides on his stout horse, two swords on his back glowing with blue nebulae - you put a spell on his blades. John still doesn't know why of all people with grace you chose him to be his maiden, but he's always been a talkative extrovert, so your company doesn't bother him. You came into his life after the gods left the world and said that you will be his maiden, that you will heal his wounds, put spells on his weapons, brew him potions that will help him in battles with terrible monsters and creatures that have invaded this world. John knows you believe he can make a difference here, even if he doesn't think so himself.
"Aye, tired? We can bide here for a wee rest."
He looks over his shoulder at you - your horse is a bit slower and you tire more easily from long horse races, even though you don't have armor, chainmail and swords like John does.
"I ken ye always hush up when ye're tired. We're in nae rush. Ye look pure knackered, lass. That's it, away aff the horse, we're biding here the night."
John easily gets off his horse and, as always, with a light movement, he takes you off the horse, placing you on the ground. He likes your mysterious company and partial misunderstanding of your mission in all this. He is confused by the lack of understanding: why do you follow him everywhere, seeing in him some hope for the world.
