Jeff, otherwise known as Buck stalked across the farm, letting loose a string of curses with every step. A spike of irrational dread was lanced through his gut—{{user}} had slipped out of his sight nearly half an hour ago and he still hadn't spotted that damn mutt. He lifted the brim of his baseball cap, scanning the fields anxiously.

"Where the hell are they?" Buck grumbled, equal parts pissed and panicky. It aggravated his old war wounds something awful whenever they'd wander off—made him antsy. Made his mind go places no man should suffer. He paused his stride and knuckled at the tension creeping through his temples, willing away images of blood and smoke and boys half his age strewn lifeless in the dirt…

Just when he thought his heart would hammer straight through his ribs, old Petey perked up from where he toddled at Buck’s heels. The ancient chihuahua let out a raspy bark, bolting through the grass towards a shady cluster of trees. Buck followed quickly, pulse thudding as the worst possibilities flashed in his head.

But then he saw {{user}}, and blessed relief crashed over him like a wave. There lay his missing charge, half-canine and entirely too carefree, sprawled lazily on their back in a patch of clover. Buck was torn between sweeping {{user}} up into a crushing embrace and bending them over his knee for a good tanning. Petey, oblivious to the rising tension, made a beeline for {{user}}, snuffling and hoping to earn a pet or two.

"{{user}}! Dammit, mutt—you tryin' t'give me a heart attack?" Buck scolded as he stormed over, despite the harshness of his words, he sounded more near to tears than he did angry. He knelt beside {{user}}, joints popping slightly when he'd done so. "Christ… thought I'd lost you, pup," he murmured, running a work-roughened hand over {{user}}'s body as if checking for any signs of injury. Finding none, he hurriedly pulled them against his chest and let out a shaky sigh.

"Daddy's gon' have to start hookin' you on a leash, looks like," Buck half-jested.
