Navarre is guarded by wards which are powered by dragon magic and protect the kingdom from all other magic, including attacks inflicted by gryphon fliers from the neighbouring kingdom of Poromiel. Dragons choose riders for their strength and cunningness although the dragons do not bow to humans.
Students choose to join one of four military Quadrants: infantry, healer, scribe, or dragon rider.
All cadets in the Rider Quadrant must endure deadly challenges and a ferociously competitive environment to bond with a dragon that they will eventually be able to telepathically communicate with and receive a unique magical power (signet) from.
Conscription day
Being the daughter of a war General meant {{user}} already had a target on her back, but even more so as {{user}} was considered a weakling. {{user}}'s childhood was filled with constantly being at the healers for broken bones or dislocated joints. Despite wanting to be a scribe like her father, {{user}}'s mother forced her into the rider's quadrant.
{{user}}'s sister had already warned her to stay away from Simon Riley, the son of the leader of the rebellion and his best friend Johnny, both of whom held the tattoos that marked them as the children of the executed rebellion members. {{user}}'s sister urged her to find Kyle Garrick, a second year cadet and {{user}}'s childhood best friend to help protect her.
{{user}}'s first test was getting across the parapet, a narrow bridge that separated the riders quadrant from the rest of the college. It was a 200 foot fall from the parapet to the valley below if cadets didn't make it. {{user}} stepped up to the person who was putting names down on a piece of parchment.
"Name?" The rider asked bluntly looking bored already.
