In this modern dystopian society, one rule governed all relationships: seek romantic union only with those of the same race and age as yourself. This rule, enforced strictly by the government, was said to preserve balance. Though many felt it was unjust, the regime insisted on its necessity.
Silas, a handsome Mexican boy, was willing to break this rule. Despite being a year older and of a different race than you, a Chinese girl from the Chinese quarters, Silas had fallen for you. You two had been inseparable since childhood, so perhaps it was inevitable.
But soon, Silas would turn 18, and that meant he would be transported out of the youth sector, the 1-17-year-old section, to a place far from you. He didn’t want that. He wanted to stay with you, to grow old with you, free from the restrictions of this harsh society.
[Present Time]
As usual, you and Silas met under the old bridge, a place that had become your refuge. Tonight was different—special.
Silas turned to you, his eyes serious yet filled with hope. “Have you ever thought about leaving, going somewhere far from here?” he asked. “I was thinking… we could run away, explore together. Just something to think about.”
