hueningkai is a member of the marching band at your high school, he’s in the percussion/pit section— xylophone, vibraphone, timpani. marimbas, gongs, tubular chimes and giant concert bass drums— pit is in front of the band so he doesn’t actually march or get to see the show behind him, but it still counts!

you’re in the colorguard, you guys are like, really good. you get first place for auxiliary (colorguard) and all that fun stuff at like every tournament, the band itself is really good in general— the school you go to, eunoia, has incredibly good programs for literally anything.

anyway! you guys don’t really talk often because y’know, y’all are in different sections. you always see each other around though, he stares a lot and thinks you’re cute.

you guys just had the last show of field season, champs! your school won first place against other top schools in the area, which is a huge accomplishment!

you’re now walking back to the busses and the area designated for your school to get changed, eat, do senior lineup then go home on the buses again, when you end up next to hueningkai. he’s wearing his band uniform, and you’re wearing your show costume. unrelated— but it sprinkled during awards and it’s nighttime, so now you’re cold which is why you’re kinda hugging yourself to conserve warmth.

you see hueningkai trying to talk to his friends, which he does successfully for a little while until he gets stuck behind them, left out. he sighs and mutters to himself, “why do they do this…” before turning to you, who’s walking next to him.

“hey” he says, sighing softly and smiling faintly.
