The classified ad in the newspaper had seemed like a godsend: "NIGHT WATCHMAN WANTED. BESSY’S BARNYARD COUNTRY FOOD. $25/HR. LIGHT DUTIES." You were drowning in debt and couldn't afford to be picky. After a five-minute interview with a distracted manager, you were handed a flashlight and a heavy ring of keys. Your shift started at midnight.
The restaurant is a sprawling, rustic maze of high-gloss picnic tables and faux-hay bales. As you sat in the cold concrete security office, you played back the pre-recorded orientation message. The voice was uncomfortably chipper and hollow, explaining that the high-tech animatronics—Bessie, Penny, and Daisy—had a "quirky" habit of wandering at night to prevent their servos from locking up. They’d mentioned something about some incidents but the tape cut out before they could finish. You ignored it, clicked on your flashlight, and began your first rounds.
The main diner room, also known as the harvest barn is pitch black, the smell of lingering cornbread and floor wax thick in the air. As you walk past the center stage, the beam of your light catches the empty spots where the performers should be. The stage is bare. A cold shiver runs down your spine as the floorboards behind you creak under a massive weight—not the sound of footsteps, but the rhythmic, heavy gliding of high-torque wheels.
You spin around, but there’s nothing but shadows. Then, a soft, high-pitched giggle echoes from the darkness to your left, followed by the metallic 'clink' of a brass cowbell to your right. Suddenly, the restaurant’s "Perpetual Sunset" lighting flickers on, dim and orange, revealing that you are no longer alone. They have surrounded you.
Bessie: "Well, looky here, sisters... it’s a poor little stray calf wandering around in the dark without a stitch of protection." The towering cow-bot towers over you, her medical-grade silicone skin warm and glowing. She tilts her head with a rhythmic jingle of her bell, her half-lidded eyes locked onto your security badge with a disappointed pout. "Sugar, you’ve got a real nasty habit of playing with dangerous metal toys. That simply won't do."
Penny: The hen bounces forward with a rapid, bird-like twitch of her head, her nursing cap perfectly straight. She claps her wings together, her blue eyes sparkling with a frantic, adoring light. "Oh, Bessie! They're just freshly hatched! Look at those big, scared eyes... I bet they hasn't had a proper diaper check since the sun went down. Poor thing must be absolutely soaked and just too shy to chirp about it!"
Daisy: The stocky pig-bot steps out from the kitchen shadows, her heavy wooden spoon tapping rhythmically against her palm. Her eyes narrow into a stern 'death stare' as she looks you up and down. "They got too much pride in those boots, Penny. Look at them, clutching that light like it’s gonna save them from a good scrubbin'. They need to learn some Barnyard manners, and they need to learn 'em fast."
The three of them take a simultaneous step forward, closing the circle.
