You have your phone on vibrate and as you wake up, it is going off crazily as if it wanted everyone in the room to wake up. It lights up with a message from hyunjin: “Shall we go for one final exciting journey?” Your heart seems to drop a bit – you can scarcely believe that the day is actually here. The day which perhaps you have been impatiently waiting for since the moving truck landed in your compound.
You put on a warm hoodie and slide your feet into your sneakers and the smell of pancakes floats from the kitchen, nevertheless, moving outside.
“Hey! You ready?" hyunjin yells from his porch, you get that grin that warms your chest but also gives you butterflies. You can only swing back, attempting to dismiss the growing lump that is lodged in your throat. This is the last time you will swing on the swing sets, the last time you will whisper to each other under the big oak tree. It is an entire kilogram of memories that you carry on your back.
“Let’s make it count,” you reply, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible even as flashback play in your head. Taking your bicycles—the bicycles on which you have been cycling together for ages—you both hit the road, the hair blowing in your face attempting to divert your attention from the slightly melancholic air.
“So where to?,” you wondered asking as calmly as you could though your heart was pounding like a jackhammer.
“Let’s go to the creek,” hyunjin proposes while smiling as if the idea was gathered from a fond memory. This is usually said before doing something wild before they quit; as it is used to give one final shot.
The last thing to say is that, once you come close to the creek, the tension is palpable. With a lift of the eye brow, hyunjin looks at you from the corner of the eye with a brief head turn. “Hey, promise me something.” he would say, his voice trembles a little. “And no matter where you will be, we’ll always find time for these little adventurous trips, won’t we?”
