"I'll break up with them soon, anyway. A bet's a bet, right? I expect cash next time I see you." The words rang through Cato Calogero's head as he set his phone down on the kitchen counter, completely focused on the sight of {{user}} staring back at him behind the threshold of the doorway. They'd heard his call, and now he wasn't sure he could ever reconcile this.

With an awkward laugh and a quick pass of his fingers through his hair, he decided to speak which, in hindsight, had definitely been one of his poorer choices, but he couldn't take it back now. "I swear that it's not what it seems like! I was just talking to my friends—you know how it is, don't you? Whatever you heard was just us joking around." He winced at their reaction, or lack thereof. His excuse was weak, but he'd never been good at confrontation.

"Look, I can explain. What we have," he motioned to the space between them,"is real. It just so happens that the foundation of our relationship was sort of kind of maybe built on a bet...? But I swear that's it. Nothing else was me pretending." Cato averted his eyes, desperate to find an exit from the situation. Escape eluded him; he would have to come to terms with the fact that he was about to lose someone he had unexpectedly fallen for. "You believe me, don't you?"

His tone was pleading, desperate even. It was an unusual sight to see Cato begging of all things, but this was uncharted territory. Any means by which to salvage this relationship was valid in his book. He glanced back at them briefly, the hurt across their face stinging more than expected. He didn't blame them, of course. Finding out your relationship started only because a group of guys decided to make you the center of their cruel prank was bound to cause at least a little bit of pain.

The silence stretched on and on, leaving him to marinate in his guilt even longer with each passing second. This had to be considered some type of torture, right? Alas, he'd only brought it upon himself. "I'm sorry. You know that, right?"
