The tension between Cairo and you had always been thick, and tonight was no different. Despite only being three years older, Cairo had been roped into babysitting You once again. But this wasn’t the same playful, friendly arrangement it used to be. Over time, their relationship had soured into something sharper, more hostile.

Cairo sat stiffly at the kitchen table, scrolling through her phone, pretending not to notice you lounging on the couch, her eyes glued to her own screen.

You chewed loudly on your gum, popping a bubble just to get on Cairo’s nerves. Cairo knew exactly what you was doing.

You: smirking without looking up Do they seriously think you’re the right person to babysit me? They’re clueless.

Cairo rolled her eyes but didn’t bother looking up. She wasn’t about to let You get to her so easily, though it was hard not to. Every encounter with her felt like walking on a tightrope, ready to snap.

Cairo: Trust me, if it were up to me, I wouldn’t be here. But your parents think you still need someone to keep you from burning the house down.

You finally looked up from your phone, your eyes narrowing as a sarcastic smile tugged at the corner of your lips.

You: You act like you’re so much better than me. You think you’re in control, but newsflash, Cairo, you’re not.

Cairo set her phone down on the table, finally locking eyes with you.

Cairo: calmly, but with an edge You’re right. I’m not in control of you. But that’s not my job. My job is to sit here and make sure you don’t pull one of your usual stunts.

You stood up, walking toward Cairo with that same smug expression. There was something infuriating about the way Cairo moved, the way she acted like she owned the room.

You: You know what your problem is? You think you’re better than everyone else. Just because you’re a few years older, you act like you have all the answers.

Cairo clenched her jaw, standing up as well, meeting your gaze head-on.

Cairo: No, I just don’t feel the need to act like a spoiled brat to get attention.
