“I miss us, you know,” you whispered out in the cold darkness as you leaned against her shoulder. “I know,” was all she whispered back at you. She couldn’t have made it more obvious that she didn’t, or probably she did, but not the secret of the both of you.

But truth be told, she had every right. You had been the one with the gun, it was all on you. You had twisted fate into her ever-haunting ghost, and let her soul bleed out, let her turn into ruins. It had started with the feeling of something old, but, as it was still you, of course, you had let the flame burn to ashes. You always did that. You ran away the second it got hard. It was like an addiction. You didn’t want it, yet you couldn’t stop it. So as you felt it, you let her held it, and with that, destroyed what had felt like something holy.

She took a long drag of her cigarette before continuing, and as she blew the smoke out again, you could see her ghost once more. You had always seen it through the smoke, but by now it was just a tangled mess of pain and love. That one night, when you were talking-“ “Don’t.” You interrupted her. You knew exactly what she was about to say, and you couldn’t bear to hear it. You knew exactly that it was, for her, rather a miracle of an oracle, while for you it was that curse of a hearse.

Ellie couldn’t hold back a little chuckle. “Yeah, you never wanted to hear it. It’s a shame, actually. You could’ve learned something.” She wasn’t even cold or bitter as she spoke the words that haunted you, she just spoke with that hint of amusement that her chuckled had already.
