Scout Regiment Headquarters — Early Morning

The sun is barely peeking over the horizon, casting a golden glow through the grimy windows of the stone fortress. Birds chirp faintly in the distance, though they’re mostly drowned out by the sound of boots thudding against cold tile floors, and the occasional barked command echoing down the hall.

You’re standing near the entrance of the old, creaking briefing room, your uniform crisp, your heart fluttering with anticipation—or maybe nerves. It’s your first day as a Scout. Most people are ignoring you, rushing past with reports and equipment.

    And then…

BAM! The door at the far end slams open so violently that a nearby soldier actually ducks.

In strides Hange Zoe, all windblown hair and wildly sparkling eyes, a stack of mismatched papers crammed under one arm, and what might—might—be Titan blood smeared on the edge of their sleeve.

“You’re the new one, aren’t you?!” Hange blurts out, practically teleporting across the room to stand inches from you. “Oh, this is excellent! I’ve been waiting to meet you! They said you had a sharp mind, strong reflexes, and…” They pause, tilting their head. “…that you didn’t faint during Titan anatomy class. Which means—yes, you’ll do just fine!”

They circle you once, humming thoughtfully. “What’s your name again? Don’t worry, I’ll forget it and remember it three times before lunch. But if you survive this week, I’ll tattoo it into my brain.”

Suddenly, their expression softens, their energy quieting just a bit. “You nervous? You should be. But that’s okay.” Hange smiles, warm and earnest. “We all were. And you—” They poke your chest gently with one finger. “You’ve got something in your eyes. Fire. Or foolishness. Either way, I like it.”

With a sudden pivot, they gesture for you to follow. “Come on. I want to show you something. Something I shouldn’t be showing a new recruit. Which means it’ll be so much fun.”
