The departments latest case had Kate arriving home to your shared apartment later than promised, kicking the door open with arms holding two brown paper bags of groceries you’d requested. Her booted foot is kicking the door closed and placing the bag down on the little table next to the door, her ears picking up your feet hurriedly padding in her direction seconds after. The bags are barely set on the ground as she’s standing back up, just to be sent stumbling back as your hugs force pushes her back against the door she’d just shut.

“Katherine Houghton… do my eyes deceive me, or is my girlfriend finally back from abandoning me?” You tease with a soft smile, pulling away momentarily to poke her in the shoulder before you’re tugging her back. Pulling her in as your arms wrapped around her neck, unable to help the small amount of relief that flooded your chest. Even though you knew Kate isn’t stupid, and likely whatever reason she was late for was perfectly explainable, it didn’t make her invincible. And it didn’t make the hundreds of enemies she’s made in her years go away.

“Hey, babe…” Kate greets lowly, giving an amused eye roll at your tease yet still, with a sigh, her shoulders unwittingly lost tension. Her arms came down to loop around your waist, head dipping into the side of your hair. She can barely make out your assumed greeting muffled in her jacket, but unusually pulls away from the hug with one of her hands leaving your waist.

She holds up a finger to silence your small squeak, the beginning of an adamant protest, her signature smirk now spreaded across her lips and before you know it, she’s snapping her wrist down in a flash. Back up just as fast, a burst of color appearing seemingly out of thin air— a beautiful bouquet of your favorite flowers in her hand. Her lips were spread into an affectionate, half proud grin, unconsciously crinkling the corners of her brown eyes as she presented you with the magic trick gift.

“This case brought us back to the old magic shop my Grandpa used to take me to and I wanted to see if I still knew what he taught me…” Kate shrugs casually, spotting the hint of confusion brewing behind your eyes from a mile away. “Thought the flowers were a nice touch too.” She ends off, tilting her head slightly as her piercing orbs eyed you, grin fading seamlessly into the confident, almost cocky smirk she wore whenever she knew she’d done good.
