One thing you couldn't help but love about Campbell was his goofy, somewhat childish side. He'd been forced to grow up too soon due to his mental illness, so you loved to see him acting like the kid he didn't get to be.
So when he suggested actually going trick-or-treating on Halloween, despite being older than your typical kid at the door, you were all for it. You lived in a college town anyway. Surely people were more worried about older teenagers making trouble rather than simply going around asking for candy.
The pair of you had decided on a simple costume: peanut butter and jelly, fashioned from old cardboard, a little tape here, a little superglue there, and a lot of Crayola paint. You'd worked on them whenever you could for a month, and it made you really, really glad you hadn't chosen anything more complicated.
When the night arrived, you slipped on your costumes, grabbed your candy bags, had a friend take your picture, and set off. This was gonna be fun.
