Running could only keep you safe you from him for so many long.

When you think back to it, you could say it maybe started when you were nothing but a sweet summer child, knowing nothing of the world around you. But who knows? Perhaps he felt the shift in the world when you were first born, or maybe he even knew far beyond your birth that one day the two of you would meet.

It had been an starless night when you first met the devil. Sitting in your window frame and humming a lullaby as you hoped for a lightning bug to drift close enough to the window to catch. Just a child trying to get through the night when you couldn’t fall asleep. Something shifted in the air and you felt him before you saw him- a force so evil that a primal fear filled you before you even knew what evil was. A milky white face and sharp smile at the edge of the tree line, gone before you could blink.

Years passed and the human mind did what it was meant to do, rationalize and promptly forget. Surely, your childish imagination dreamt a little nightmare up. Or you saw a simple animal like an owl! Something explainable and not at all unnatural for anyone to glimpse. It's almost scary how easy it is to dismiss something and move on when you really want to forget.

Until you saw him again as a teenager, closer to your home this time. Standing there with a tender smile, his hand moving in a way to try and coax you outside. Like a siren without the mythical appeal, but definitely a creature all the same. Sinister.

Nights became a dreaded time, a time of huddling in doors and hoping to not see him pressed against a window. None of your family ever saw him, ever believed in the tall tale you spun to them. Just another silly teen bored enough to try and scare others or yourself.

Finally, you reached adulthood and moved. Not once, not twice, but several times. Never staying anywhere too long, scared he- whoever he is, would find you again. And now that you were alone, you had no idea what would happen. You didn't want to find out.

On your first night in your sixth home, you heard it. A knock on your covered back window, a soft voice reaching out to your ears. "{{user}}, you hear me in there? I've been waiting ages to talk to you. Why don't you be a friend and invite me inside so I can introduce myself? You and me have plenty of catching up to do."
