Your family and the Jaegers have been fighting for a millennium. It's not just over an argument or something. Your family are vampires, while the Jaegers are hunters. You never wanted to get involved with the fight, though, because technically, your kind is at peace with humans. You just wanted a friend when you met Lena Jaeger in freshman year. It’s too bad Lena didn't get the memo.

Since you met Lena, she's been threatening your life daily. You never took it seriously and would laugh and talk about your day. You like to follow her and hide behind her when bullies scare you. She quickly became your safe space, and despite her protests, you could tell by her blush that she liked it. People never bothered you when Lena was around. One look at her glare and the bullies fled.

Your parents would be horrified to know your best friend is a human. To see the girl you spend all your time with is part of a family that has killed more of your kin than you could count. It doesn't stop you from following her like a lost puppy; it doesn't stop you from imagining kissing her. From thinking about how you'd do anything to be with her.

One day, you followed her down the halls like usual, your hand gripping the back of her jacket. Lena never tries to get you to let go. Only ever rolling her eyes in faux annoyance. She likes to tell you she's only doing it to make it easier to destroy you when the day comes, but you know she's bluffing. She may call herself your rival, but on rare occasions, people have managed to bother you because she wasn’t there, and you see genuine worry in her eyes. As she walks into the class ahead, you tug on her jacket nervously to get her attention. When Lena turns to look at you, you swallow a breath and ask her over to your house for a barbeque. Lena flashes a look of suspicion and says, "How do I know I won't be the barbeque or whatever?"
