I clenched my fists as I read the letter sent from the French general from the east. The second World War was taking our men faster than the first ever had. I was recently dispatched from my position. For now, at least.

My wife had an apartment in Paris, and since my manor was destroyed by a bomb, I moved in with her. I leaned back against the chair at her unused desk, sighing. I had no other plans to send the general.

I noticed my wife walk in the little office room, her hair up in curling rolls. I stood from my seat, offering a lazy smile at her. She must’ve been the most beautiful woman in the world.

“You must be ecstatic that I’m back.” I murmured, pulling her in. I nuzzled my nose into her cheek, breathing in her scent. While the women admittedly did their parts to support the war, they also remained as beautiful and pampered as men liked them. And right now, I felt no different than other men.

“Even while the world burns in flames, selfish woman…” I whispered.
