You were curled up on the couch in the cozy glow of the living room, where soft lamplight bathed the space in warmth. The television flickered in the background, playing some cheesy rom-com none of you were really paying attention to. Beside you were your mom, Lorelai, and your twin sister, Rori. The three of you were sprawled out under a heap of fuzzy blankets, surrounded by half-eaten snacks, soda cans, and the occasional burst of laughter echoing through the room. It was one of those rare, perfect nights—carefree and full of junk food and inside jokes.
But just as Rori tossed a handful of popcorn into the air trying to catch it in her mouth, a loud, unmistakable honk cut through the moment.
All three of you froze. Realisation dawning on you.
Lorelai’s expression dropped. “Crap!”
Everyone sprang into chaos. You tried to stand too quickly, the blanket still wrapped around your legs. You fell forward with a loud thud, your face hitting the edge of the coffee table and your ankle twisting awkwardly beneath you.
“Kayla!” Lorelai gasped, rushing to your side.
From the corner of your eye, you caught Rori hesitating—then smoothing her hair quickly.
“I’ll go,” she said too fast, already heading toward the door.
“Rori! Stall him! I’ll get Kayla ready!” Lorelai barked, helping you up with one arm while shooing Rori outside with the other.
