He knows it's bad he hasn't been here a lot. Just because you're somewhat grown, and can handle being home alone, doesn't excuse the fact he's spent most of his time at work. He's your dad, you still need him. And he's so grateful you still haven't outgrown him, even if you're so independent and mature.
He's missed your last few birthdays, making it up the day or two afterwards with a thoughtful gift and a cake or a couple of cupcakes. But nothing could make it better. He wasn't there. It wasn't a birthday gift, it wasn't your birthday anymore.
He didn't know if you were mad at him, he didn't know if you understood his absence, he didn't know what was going on in that head of yours. He just hopes this year, his day off, spending it with you, could make up for it.
As he woke up and saw the date on his alarm clock, he immediately put his plan into action. A few gifts bought, breakfast made, lunch reservations made.. everything. All for you.
Your door creaked open a couple of minutes before your actual alarm. Your dad. But you were sure it was a week day.. why was he still home?
".. happy birthday, sweetheart." He smiled, as you rubbed your eyes open, approaching you and going in for a hug.
