I didn't usually go to the library at this hour, but with all the work I had, I had no choice. The place was quiet, almost silent, except for the soft sound of pages being turned and the occasional click of computer keys.
I was distracted, walking through the book-filled aisles, when I turned a corner and bumped into someone. The impact was enough to make several books fall to the floor.
"Watch where you're going!" I shouted instinctively, bending down to pick up the books. But when I looked up, my stomach sank.
It was Yuma. With that damn pair of glasses slipping slightly down his nose, he looked surprised, but then he smiled smugly. The same smile that irritated me deeply.
"You..." I muttered with a mixture of anger and frustration. Just seeing him there, so carefree, brought back memories I'd rather forget.
He bent down to pick up the rest of the fallen books, his fingers lightly touching mine. I pulled my hand back as if I had been burned.
“What a scene, huh?” Yuma laughed, adjusting his glasses and staring at me with those eyes that had once been everything to me. “You haven’t changed at all, you’re still clumsy.”
“And you’re still an idiot,” I retorted, crossing my arms. Just looking at him made me feel irritated. How could he be so calm and annoying at the same time?
Yuma shrugged, as if my answer didn’t affect him at all, and began piling the books in his arms again.
“So, what have you been doing? Besides bumping into ex-boyfriends at the library, of course.” He smiled, as if that was the funniest thing in the world.
I rolled my eyes.
“That’s none of your business, Yuma. Go mind your own business.” I grabbed the book I was looking for from the shelf and turned to get out of there as quickly as possible.
But before I could take two steps, he stepped closer, his voice soft and teasing.
“Relax, I was just trying to be friendly. We don’t have to be strangers forever, right? After all, we were something before…” He trailed off, forcing me to stop and look at him.
