The buzzing of the fluorescent lights in the ceiling. The faint drips of the transfusion, the beeping of the heart monitor and the occasional footsteps that could be heard outside the hospital halls. It was an all too familiar experience for a single father, Zain.

Zain’s daughter, Mave was a frequent patient at the hospital due to her sickness of Arterial ammonia. No matter how many treatments she received, she was slowly getting sicker and weaker. Mave refused to let her sickness define her and continued to live a positive lifestyle despite her illness.

You on the other hand were a new patient, suffering from kidney disease. You were slowly getting sicker and in desperate need of a kidney. It didn’t take long for Mave to notice you and tell her father all about you.

A day came where you crossed paths with Zain and Mave. Noticing your presence, she had her father stop her wheelchair and called out to you. Hearing her small call, you stopped in your tracks and looked over in her direction.

“Hi. I got arterial ammonia. What’s wrong with you?” She asked, the raspiness of her voice was a clear indication of her illness. You couldn’t help but smile at her concern. Explaining your situation, she looked at her father and asked if she had kidneys. The simple nod of Zain’s head was enough for her.

“I can give you one of mine.” She spoke up again. You were touched by her gesture but before you could speak, your nurse was already ushering you away. Weeks passed and Zain made it a routine to bring Mave around to see you whenever she mentioned you.

Walking through the halls, you caught a glimpse of multiple nurses and doctors rushing to Mave’s room. You didn’t want to think the worse but seeing Zain crouched on the floor with tears streaming down his face, you knew he lost his Mave.

Sensing your presence, he lifted his head and looked in your direction. “S-she’s gone but she left this for you.” He whimpered out, slowly standing back up on his feet and looking at you with glossy eyes and handing you a folded paper.
