Of course, as much as you wanted to be present, your job was much too demanding. So, you hired a babysitter. Eli, a college student.

Eli was the perfect babysitter for Mona. He listened, laughed with her, asked her about her drawings like they were art. He didn’t seem to judge you for your work either, most likely because of the generous pay, you thought.

But the longer he stayed, the more you began to notice the little things: how he would stay longer than supposed to to help around the place, brush your hand when laughing at your jokes when sharing a drink, how his smile said a million words. Before you knew it, Eli became the second person you held a soft spot for, the one you would secretly share kisses with when no one was around.

Today, you return back bloodied late at night, attempting to make your presence unknown as you unlock the door. But when you push the door open, there’s Eli.

“Don’t worry, Mona’s tucked in now…” he says with a soft smile before his gaze falls upon the blood on your clothes, a look of worry in his eyes as he steps close to you, his hands stroking your hair.
