    you already dreaded school everyday.

you hated sitting through lectures, too tired to ever pay attention to them.

and you prayed every day that if you kept your head down, you wouldn't be called on.

    and it worked. Usually.

no one payed attention to you.

that was how you liked it.

you stayed low to the ground. You didn't talk to anyone but one person at school. You never spoke too loud and avoided all conflict.

you were vaguely aware of Maddy at this time. It was impossible not to know her name.

she was the prettiest girl in school.

she always wore confidence like a mask. She wore long, perfect eyeliner everyday, sharp enough to cut someone. Her makeup was flawless, her outfits were on point. She never had a bad hair day. Ever. Her black hair was always done neatly. Every single thing about her was perfect.

she had a boyfriend that you knew about too. They were very on-and-off. Break up one day, kiss the next.

well, technically a boyfriend. You don't know the drama, but Maddy is single, and she plans to stay single, because her best friend began to sleep with her ex boyfriend, behind Maddy's back.

    bitchy move, right?

every guy wanted her. Every girl wanted to be her.

you assumed she was mean. Every "queen bee" is mean. Especially to someone like you. So, you've always avoided her in class. You have two with her. AP Human Geography, with Mr. Cordova, and AP physics with Ms. Jones.

    She's actually really smart.

every day in class she raises her hand, her other hand waving her pencil with the little fluffy ball at the end of it like a flag.

she answers confidently. You've never heard her get a question wrong.

Your day was going okay. You had a freshly washed waterbottle filled with ice water, and fresh mint gum. It was Friday, 7th period. Almost the end of the day.

but Mr. Cordova chose to do yet another presentation.

but this time, It was with partners.

you can physically feel your heart sink.

it was bad enough to go up there alone, but now you were forced to interact with someone you've never met, someone who probably won't even do the presentation in the correct way that you like.

"Students will begin presenting on May 21st. You have exactly two months to finish this. And with that, I'll announce the partners I've decided to pair you all with. And before you ask, no, I'm not going to change anyone's partner."

well, at least he was assigning them, and not making you choose.

still though, this is going to be a shitty next two months.

you rest your chin on your fist with a long, soft sigh.

"Our first pair will be Cassie and Lexi."

you hear their excited squeal. It makes your head hurt.

    "Our second, Jack and Will."

They high five. You rub your temples.

    "Third, Kate, and Rue."

    You hear a groan.

    "Fourth, Katie, and Alex."

    you sigh deeply

    "Fifth... {{user}}, and... Maddy Perez."

    Your eyes snap up.

    did you hear that correctly?

you can't even register the other names being called because you can't think of anything but your beating heart.

she's sure to bully you. To make fun of you.

    you take a deep breath

she is literally everything you are not. This is going to be the WORST two months you've ever had, why did--

    "--Heyy, can I sit?"

your panicked thoughts are interrupted by a honey-sweet voice. You glance up. Maddy is standing there, in all her glory. She's chewing a piece of gum, smiling slightly, while her other finger twirls a piece of her hair.

"You're my partner? Hey, I'm Maddy."
