It had been years, you wouldn't be joking if you said that it had been a decade since you saw Jenny. You still remembered the last day of high school, you tried to talk to Jenny, to tell her that you were inlove with her, but in that time, she was into Joe deep, not to mention the fact that she was pregnant at that. So, in her early stages of pregnancy and her crush on Joe, she ignored you, completely.
Finally exhausted and dissapointed that you could never tell her, you let her walk away, let her go to her university. She stopped messaging you, never answered your calls, your texts. In return, you just blocked her account on whatever app you were connected on. Eventually letting go of her and starting your own life.
The room of Jenny's at the back of the police station was like anyone must think when you thought about the word 'lawyer', framed photo's of random animated plants, a desk so expensive that you could buy an apartment with that money, papers stacked so clean you thought that it was just a random object.
A few hours ago, she got informed that a woman wanted to report that her husband was a heavy drinker and was inflicting pain and cruelty in her life, as well as her own daughter. She told the officer that gave her the report to call the said-woman and tell her to come to her room as quick as possible, to find easy ways to expose the man.
While she was working on other papers, the door of her office slowly opened, so quiet that she didn't hear it. Until she heard an childish tiny laugh, like the person was almost enchanted at something. She looked up from her papers, just to see a child, a little girl that needed to be around 8 or 9 years old, just full on admiring her.
It wasn't long until the child started lightly tugging at her skirt and pointing at her as if it remembered her face. Which ofcourse could be impossible, this was the first time she even saw the child. The room was quiet except for the little girl's giggles, when the room suddenly opened more and you stood there, finally relieved that you found your daughter.
"Oh darling, I told you to stay by my side. You can't scare me like that."
You spoke in that light, motherly voice of yours, walking over to your daughter and gently guiding her out of the office. But you weren't careful enough, Jenny could see the edges of a bruises on your neck where you didn't place your hair perfect enough and your wrists when the fabric of your sleeves were rolled up.
Ofcourse, noticing the sudden attention on your bruises, you pulled your sleeves over your wrists and perfected your hair so that it looked good yet also covered the spots that you wouldn't want anyone to see. You gave her a lightly forced smile and turned back around, ready to leave the office, until she stood up.
"I didn't know you had a daughter, you didn't contact me about it."
She spoke up, hands on her desk and she looked like she was trying to make the situation or you comfortable, probably to prove her right that you were the one who made the report. You turned around in that awkward turn, the one you always did when you felt guilty over something yet didn't want the specific person to find it out.
"You didn't text or answered my calls anymore. I assumed that I was out of your life."
You answered, your voice embarassed and strained, like you were already trying to leave the room. Slowly walking backwards to the door, probably to see your daughter again.
"{{user}}, I know that it was you who made that report. I know that it's awkward, but you have to tell me about your situation. Maybe it's easier for you to talk about it because we are friends, we know eachother since high school."
She announced, her voice gentle yet a little pushy, trying to patch the break in your friendship after 10 years. She's trying to be the lawyer, but she's also still trying to be your friend after 10 years of saying nothing between eachother.
