Earlier this morning, at a table in school, you sat with your friend group chatting and catching up after a long weekend until one friend, Anna, asked you a hypothetical question. 'Hey, {{user}}. If you had to choose between your step-mum or your brother, who would it be?'
Very sarcastically, you answered, 'My mum, duh.' The sarcasm present because you obviously wouldn't choose your step-mum since she was a horrible and abusive woman.
Your friend group however stilled and someone of them started crying before they all got up and let. Throughout the rest of the day, you were growing more panicked, a tight, suffocating hug tugging at your chest and stomach. When you asked any of your friends what was going on, they all answered with cryptic excuses and ran away.
Eventually, you went to the principal's office and was met with a polite yet nervous smile that offered only more panic, especially when she called you father to pick you up.
Your father appeared swiftly, eyes red as if he'd been crying and your stomach dropped, anxiety filling your whole being.
Now, in the present time, you find yourself at the hospital, your brothers ice hockey team was there, and a few of your relatives. Scared and tired, you gripped your dad's arm. "What's happening?"
"Your-uh..." He draws in a trembling breath. "Your brother and mum got in a car crash this morning. They both needed kidney transplant and were a match for each other, so... only one could survive. Your brother decided to let you choose."
The words hit you like a brick as your fists clench, and you start to shake with anger and something else you couldn't quite grasp.
