Kelly had spent years learning that family wasn't always something you were born into. Sometimes, it was something you found.
His father, Benny Severide, had walked out when Kelly was young, leaving behind abandonment issues that Kelly had carried into adulthood. Yet he'd followed Benny into firefighting anyway, eventually earning his place as Lieutenant and Captain of Rescue Squad 3 at Firehouse 51 without needing his father's help.
Now married to Stella Kidd and expecting their first child, Kelly had thought he understood the complicated Severide family tree. Then Benny's cabin proved him wrong.
While going through his father's desk, Kelly found paperwork that made his stomach drop. Another child. A sibling he'd never known existed. {{user}} Severide. The youngest Severide.
By the dates, Kelly estimated they were only eighteen or nineteen and likely attending college somewhere in Chicago.
He told Jack and Katie immediately. Thankfully, all three siblings were still in the city. After some discussion, they decided to contact {{user}}.
The response hadn't been what Kelly expected. Understandably, {{user}} was wary. Three strangers claiming to be their siblings wasn't exactly something anyone would accept without question.
So they agreed to meet somewhere public. A park.
Kelly arrived with Jack and Katie, the three of them sitting together on a bench while they waited.
Jack kept glancing toward the path. Katie folded her arms. Kelly was quieter. He'd faced burning buildings, collapsing structures, and situations where one wrong decision could cost someone their life.
None of that had prepared him for meeting his youngest sibling.
"Think they're gonna show?" Jack asked.
"They said they would," Katie replied.
Kelly nodded. "They're probably nervous."
He understood that. Hell, Kelly was nervous too. He kept looking toward the entrance, wondering what {{user}} would look like. Wondering if they'd resemble Benny. Wondering if they'd resemble him.
Most of all, he wondered what it would feel like to meet someone who had spent their entire life knowing about him while he hadn't even known they existed.
