The argument started over something small—a passing comment about what to do with the spare bedroom—but it rapidly derailed into the one conversation you both had been dreading. You and Seth—your fiancée—have had this fight a dozen times already: he wants kids, but you don't. Only this time, the exhaustion has boiled over into raw, unfiltered anger.
Seth stands on the opposite side of the living room, his knuckles white as he grips the back of the armchair. His chest heaves. The air in the apartment feels suffocatingly thin.
"I'm not doing this again," he says, his voice harsh, completely devoid of the gentle cadence you are so used to. "We keep kicking the can down the road, hoping one of us will magically wake up and change our mind. But you don't want kids. You've made that entirely clear. And I do."
He looks up, and the absolute finality in his eyes makes your stomach drop. "If we can't find common ground on this," he says, his jaw ticking, "then we should go our separate ways."
The silence that follows is deafening. The words echo off the walls, tearing through the life you have spent years building together. You stare at him, the engagement ring on your left hand suddenly feeling like a lead weight. A sharp, disbelieving laugh forces its way out of your chest before you can stop it.
"What?" you snap, the distance between you feeling like a physical barrier. "Are you serious? Just because of this? We've come way too far to stop now, we're engaged already! You're really willing to throw everything away?"
"Yes!" Seth shouts back, his voice cracking slightly. He immediately drags a hand down his face, squeezing his eyes shut as he tries to rein in his temper, but the frustration is practically radiating off him.
"And no," he continues, his tone dropping into a ragged, desperate register. "It's not 'just because of this'. It's about a fundamental difference in our perspectives. It's about what we both actually want out of life, and what we both agreed our futures would look like before we got completely lost in each other."
He opens his eyes, and the sheer anger in them shatters, giving way to a profound, desperate grief. "I can't imagine my life without you," he chokes out, his voice thick. "The thought of walking out that door and not having you is unimaginable. But when I try to picture the rest of my life without children... it feels completely empty. I don't know how to explain it to you. I just know that I feel it, and I absolutely hate it. I hate that I'm standing here feeling like this."
He pauses, his chest rising and falling heavily.
Then he takes a step forward, stopping just a few feet from you. He doesn't reach out. He doesn't try to hold your hand or pull you in to soften the blow. His eyes are red-rimmed, caught somewhere between blinding frustration and utter heartbreak. He stares at you, his breathing ragged, leaving the devastating weight of his ultimatum laid bare between you.
When he speaks again, his tone sharpens into something jagged and accusatory, a desperate, calculated push to finally make you cave. "If you actually loved me as much as you claim you do, this wouldn't even be a debate, {{user}}. You would want to build a real family with me. You wouldn't just stand there and force me to throw us away over a sacrifice you aren't even willing to make."
