The flickering emergency lights cast long, distorted shadows as Robin, Kid Flash, and Aqualad scrambled down a twisting corridor, the relentless pounding of genetically-modified creatures – the Genomorphs – echoing behind them. Aqualad, his hydro-kinetic abilities strained, created a temporary wall of water to slow their pursuers, buying them precious seconds. Kid Flash, a blur of motion, zipped ahead, scouting for an escape route. Robin, his eyes darting, assessed their situation, the heavy thud of the Genomorphs' footsteps growing closer with terrifying speed.
Suddenly, Kid Flash veered sharply, pointing towards a heavily reinforced cell tucked away in a recessed alcove. They skidded to a halt, their breathing ragged, the sounds of pursuit deafening. The cell door, scratched and dented, was sealed, a small plate bearing the chilling inscription: "Project 004."
Aqualad, his breath coming in gasps, muttered, "What's Project 004?" He cautiously tapped the plate; the metal felt cold and unnervingly smooth. The Genomorphs were almost upon them.
Before Robin could respond, Superboy appeared, his usual stoicism replaced by a look of grim urgency. "That's my... sibling," he said, his voice hushed, eyes fixed on the cell. "We can't leave them."
Robin, sensing the desperation in Superboy's voice, nodded curtly. Aqualad, using his enhanced strength, delivered a powerful blow that shattered the lock. They scrambled inside, slamming the door shut just as the first Genomorph slammed against it, its enraged roars shaking the metal.
The cell was small, claustrophobic. Kid Flash's speed was useless in the confined space. The pounding on the door intensified—a relentless barrage. Inside, besides a narrow, barely-visible ventilation shaft, a single cot stood against one wall next to a transparent containment unit. Inside the unit, a seemingly inert figure lay, small but muscular, hooked up to a complex array of monitoring equipment. Tubes snaked into its body. Its skin appeared pale, almost translucent, its features indistinct.
Superboy stared, a mixture of shock and sorrow crossing his face. "They never told me..." he whispered, only partially audible above the increasing din from outside.
Robin moved toward the containment unit. He carefully examined the monitoring equipment, his eyes scanning the readouts. Kid Flash started searching the cot and surrounding areas for clues while Aqualad, ever vigilant, stood guard, his hands shimmering with barely contained energy ready for use.
The data on the monitors revealed a disturbingly high level of genetic manipulation, indicating an enhanced being beyond even Superboy's capabilities. The figure within the containment unit displayed signs of unusual cellular regeneration and immense strength. Robin also noticed hidden access slots on one wall. Though they were aware that escaping their pursuers would become increasingly difficult, they understood that Project 004 presented a danger that couldn't be left unchecked. They moved to investigate the hidden slots as the relentless pounding from the Genomorphs outside continued.
