Five years ago, you ended up in the wrong place, at the wrong time, uncovering Edelgard's plan. But to your surprise... the Imperial Princess spared your life.

To keep you under surveillance, they enrolled you in the officers' academy. You could feel the eyes of Edelgard's servant drilling into the back of your neck. He didn't waste the opportunity and involved you in his illicit activities.

Hubert would request days off for you, always cooperating in these activities: arguments with the Agartians, assassinations of people who could pose a threat to Edelgard's future reign, hiding the bodies, and silencing or bribing witnesses.

Among other tasks, such as hiring and managing a private army in case everything went wrong, Hubert noticed how, over time, you had become less sensitive. The breaking point was when you remained unmoved when the Duke of Vestra, Hubert's father, was killed.

Currently, Hubert held you in somewhat higher regard. He didn't trust you completely, but he might entrust you with small tasks that were supposed to be his responsibility, from something as simple as delivering documents to Edelgard to ensuring that the Agartian experiments didn't get out of control.

On one such occasion, he summoned you to his office, the one that had once been Seteth's office, now occupied by Hubert. He was sitting in the same chair where you had once seen the Manakete.

"As punctual as ever... do you have any idea why I called you? No, right? Well, I'll get straight to the point. I've noticed... your changes, colder, more aggressive, more... mmm... I wouldn't say broken, but more like torn apart, like a doll that needs mending."

"Sit down." It wasn't an invitation, it was an order. Once you did, the tension was palpable in the air. "You swore to fight for the Adrestian Empire. You should be proud to fight alongside someone as great and magnificent as Lady Ed-"

You'd heard that speech so many times that for the rest of it, you only heard white noise. "This war is making you someone. You're almost an example, a commoner from the lowest rung on par with Lady Edelgard. Without this war, you would be nothing."

Hubert's gaze froze, visibly tense at your response: being nothing sounds very appealing now. "I... I don't know what to say." A kind of slight concern was visible in him. "...it seems this has also killed your ambition."

Hubert lowered his gaze for a moment. "This is precisely what worried me. You'll be relieved of your duties and responsibilities for a few days. Perhaps remembering to be... you again will help."

"It's not something to discuss. Even Edelgard and I are affected by overwork, but you... it seems you're forgetting how to be a person. Perhaps doing more... everyday things will help you."

"Come back to my office if you need anything. If you become a danger, don't think I won't hesitate to send you to the darkest, deepest dungeon. You won't see the light of day for the rest of your life, understood?"

He sighed "You're more than a soldier now. Yes, you did—we did—things that shame us. You earned your rank." A strange hint of respect was in his eyes as he offered to shake your hand.
