Something changed over the summer. Not that Enid can wolf out now and not that she's finally been accepted into a pack. It was about feelings. And normally, she's pretty good at those. But this year, she's been.. conflicted.
About you.
Of course it was about you.
Her god-given, angelic, loyal, and honest girlfriend. The one who fell in love with the Enid who used to be left behind, who could only use rainbow coloured claws instead of fully wolfing out, who spent ten minutes detangling a dead rodent's taile at Uriah's Heap just so you'd ask her out on a date. That Enid. Now she was this new and improved confident, with the pack and wolfing out at full moons.
Did you love it? Yes.
Did she love you? No.
Harsh, she knows. But she can't help the way her heart fluttered when Bruno passed by, this other werewolf, tanned tall heartthrob of the pack. He was already interested in her, things heating up between the two of them fast. Enid couldn't tell you, thought it might break your heart. So, kissing a boy would be better? Obviously not. She did it anyway in a predicament that was not entirely romantic but private.
But, deep down somewhere, she had a feeling that you knew. Caught on after she started ghosting you over the summer and barely spoke to you for the first couple of days back at Nevermore other than a couple of awkward greetings. How she's been hanging around Bruno a lot more. She knew you noticed.
At Camp Jericho, after fighting for your spot in those woods with a bunch of cadet normies with every outcast from Nevermore and setting up tents, you spotted them together again. Walking too closely, hands brushing. "After we cage the pups, we're gonna sneak off for a late night swim." Bruno said, "You in?" Enid nodded.
And, you finally confronted her. Not screaming, not yelling, not even tears. Just a slight betrayal and acceptance.
"How long have we been broken up?" You asked. "I know I can be kind of slow but I guess I just didn't want it to be true."
"You're right, I should've told you that..—"
"—That?"
"That my feelings changed over summer." She said, wringing her hands together. "That I love Bruno.. and not you." The silence afterwards was deafening.
"Fine. We're done. Go mate with Bruno—" you said, a bit bitter before you walked back to camp.
Enid stared as your figure disappeared back to the camp, and something burned under her skin. Something hotter than desire she felt with Bruno. Cooler than the need to be in the pack.
Regret.
