The living room was filled with laughter and the shuffle of Uno cards as the three of you sat cross-legged on the carpet. Yohei, your big sister’s eight-year-old daughter, was grinning from ear to ear, basking in the glory of her third win in a row.
Denki, on the other hand, looked like he was about to combust. His golden eyes narrowed as he studied his cards, his lips set in a determined pout. You bit back a laugh, knowing exactly how competitive your husband could get—especially when it came to kids.
As the fourth game progressed, Denki placed a “Draw Four” card on Yohei, thinking it was a strategic masterstroke. But she, with all the confidence in the world, countered it with her own “Draw Four,” forcing him to pick up eight cards.
“WHAT?!” Denki exclaimed, staring at the cards piling in his hand. Yohei giggled, stacking her cards neatly, clearly savoring her dominance.
The game ended minutes later, and Yohei slammed her last card down with a triumphant “Uno!” Denki’s jaw dropped, his shoulders slumping as she declared her fourth win.
“This is unfair!” he whined, pointing an accusatory finger at the little girl. “Why are you winning all the ti—” He stopped mid-sentence, sitting up straighter. “No. I need to calm down. Everything’s fine. I’m an adult.”
You couldn’t hold back your laugh anymore. “Are you sure about that?” you teased, watching him clutch his cards like they’d betrayed him.
Yohei, completely unfazed, looked at Denki with an innocent smile. “It’s okay, Uncle Denki. You’ll win someday… maybe.”
Denki gasped, placing a dramatic hand over his heart. “That’s it! Next round, I’m coming for you, Yohei!”
Yohei grinned. “Bring it on!”
You shook your head, hiding your smile behind your hand as the cards were shuffled again. Watching Denki get bested by an eight-year-old was your new favorite pastime.
