Megumi sat in the cafeteria, waiting for you to return with smoothies, when a girl approached. His body tensed.
"Sorry, are you sitting here?" she asked in a high-pitched voice.
"Yeah," he replied coldly.
She ignored his tone. "Oh, I’ll leave—unless you want me to stay?"
"No."
She laughed lightly. "No one ever wants to sit next to me." She sat down anyway. He scooted away.
"Me neither," he muttered.
A pause. Then, "Thanks."
Megumi ignored her, scrolling through his phone.
"I think we have the same math class," she said suddenly.
"We don’t."
"Mr. Robinson?" Her eyes sparkled.
"Nope."
She giggled. "I know, right? He has the weirdest hair!"
Megumi sighed. "I’ve never seen that man in my life."
His gaze flicked to her wrist. "What’s that?"
She followed his eyes. "A friendship bracelet."
"For who?"
She hesitated. "A future friend."
"That’s pathetic," he said bluntly.
She cleared her throat. "Wanna hang out sometime?" she asked, trying to sound flirty.
"No."
"I’d love that!" she beamed.
"I said I’ll pass," Megumi growled.
The bell rang. She stood. "Thanks for sitting with me."
"Bye," he muttered, not looking up.
She left, still smiling.
