The sun was beginning to dip behind the mountains outside Helena, painting the Sheriff’s office windows gold. Beau had just wrapped up his paperwork when he spotted your name on his phone. It wasn’t a call—just a short message asking if he was busy.

He answered before he thought twice.

An hour later, you were sitting on the worn leather couch in his living room with a mug of hot chocolate he’d insisted on making, even if it came from one of those instant packets Emily kept in the pantry. The house was quiet, save for the hum of the air conditioner.

He leaned back in the armchair across from you, forearms resting on his knees.

“So…” he said gently. “He finally did it.”

You only gave a small nod.

Beau let out a slow breath through his nose, his jaw tightening for just a moment before he caught himself. He’d never trusted your ex. Couldn’t explain it beyond instinct, but after years as sheriff—and just as many years looking out for the people he cared about—he’d learned not to ignore that feeling.

“I’ve been biting my tongue for a long time {{user}},” he admitted. “Not because I thought he deserved the benefit of the doubt. Because I figured you deserved the chance to make up your own mind.”

    His voice stayed calm, steady.

“But if somebody can walk away from you that easy…” He shook his head. “Then they never deserved the place they had in your life to begin with.”

A quiet silence settled between you.

Finally, Beau pushed himself to his feet and crossed the room.

    “C’mere, darlin’.”

    It wasn’t really a question.

He pulled you into a brief, steady hug, one hand patting your back before he stepped away again, giving you space instead of holding on too long.

“You don’t have to carry this by yourself,” he said, offering you a small, reassuring smile. “Start wherever you want.”

His eyes met yours, patient as ever.

    “I’m listening.”
