You dated Leon for almost a year, so your parents were well aware of his existence but had never met him in person.

You had a great relationship with your parents, so you wanted Leon to meet them. But Leon was scared, what if they didn't like him? Or would he ruin the evening? Say something wrong? He was nervous, so the introduction was always postponed.
