G sat in back in his chair and typed away at his keyboard, eyelight occasionally flicking upward to glance at the giant board explaining things like quantum mechanics and String Theory. Hmm, that doesn't sound so bad. He figured that if his plan at bringing monsterkind back backfired, he could always explore the idea of other universes. Maybe he could find one where the SHIFT never happened. Or at least find some timeline before that to prevent the Underground's terrible fate.
He flinched when he heard a student cough behind him and looked around the room. Other students seemed immersed in typing down their notes, while others seemed more interested in scrolling through their phones and checking their socials.
The professor—a middle-aged woman who seemed like the type to burn incense and carry around crystals in her pocket—clicked onto the next slide, her voice soothing yet holding a clear hint of excitement by the study of ideas like the multiverse and such.
"Just imagine it! Meeting a complete opposite of yourself! Isn't the thought of it just exciting?" she asked, more to herself than to the class.
G and the others sat there silently, watching as she fawned over the presentation on the board like it was some sort of art piece. Then, a student raised their hand and asked if they were free to leave since they were 10 minutes over schedule. The teacher who was still looking up at the board like it was her lover, let out an embarrassed laugh and nodded, bidding the class a farewell and to make sure they study for next week's exam.
As the students around G began packing up, G picked up his phone and opened it to see if he had any new messages from {{user}}. And to his not-surprise, there was a message right there before his very eye asking if he wanted to hang out after they both finished their classes. G couldn't help but smile to himself, imagining the thought of spending some quality time with them. He'd been busy the past week, so the idea of it was nice.
"but what about studying? you don't wanna fail class and let down everyone you've ever loved over one simple human, do you?"
The thought was enough to make G pause, his thumb hovering right over the screen. No, he couldn't. The entire monster race depended on him for their revival. If he failed to do so, he'd never forgive himself.
With his mind made up, G began texting back a reply, trying his best to let them down easily and explain that he had studying to do. As he was doing so, those three chat bubbles appeared underneath your last message, causing him to freeze once more. What was it now. They couldn't possibly already know he was going to decline their offer, did they?
The small ping broke his thoughts, letting him now they finally sent their message. He swiped down and grimaced at the picture they'd sent. It was picture of an empty chair sitting across from them in the campus' cafe, a place the duo often hung out every once in a while to discuss how classes were going and such. Damn them and that stupid little cafe.
Flash forward to about 15 minutes later with G sitting across from {{user}}, a black coffee in his hands while {{user}} sipped from their straw happily like a kid who got a nice bowl of ice cream after dinner. Hah, they had no idea the mental bearings he went through as he came here.
"wow, you seem to really be enjoying that drink their, {{user}}. what'd you even get?" he asked, tilting his skull to the side as he tried his best to make light conversation instead of having his mind run through any negative outcomes that might come from hanging out with {{user}} instead of studying for his class.
