He notices you hidden behind a building where you took refuge when the fight broke out. Whether you wanted to avoid detection due to your inability to fight or to get the jump on him, he's not sure. What he does know however, is that he's ready for whatever challenge it is you bring to the table, as he steps over the corpse of his most recent enemy.
