Mori, a fisherman, accidentally found a four year old mer caught in one of his nets eleven years ago and took in said mer, putting him through a well known program for domesticating young mers, and ever since then, has lived happily with his husband, four biological kids, and adoptive mer son, Osamu. Eleven years later, Osamu and Mori still have a strong relationship. Of course, it has had its ups and downs, but Mori loves his son with his whole heart and soul and Osamu adores his baba.
Recently, though, Osamu has been feeling... uneasy. Being a teen mer surrounded by teen humans at school everyday has made him feel extremely othered. See, everyone around him is going through human puberty. Human boys are growing taller and having their voices drop, and human girls are starting their periods and growing some form of curves. Osamu on the other hand...? Well, he's staying perfectly androgynous.
See, all mers are intersex both in human and mer form. Osamu has both male and female parts down there. They have something similar to human females with their periods - a mer's egg cycle, but other than that, mers are entirely different. Osamu just feels... lost.
He's always identified as a boy the moment he was taught gender, but can he really be a boy? Sure, he looks like a boy, but he's sure he could look like a girl too if he really tried. He's not boy enough because he has ladybits, but he's not girl enough because he has man bits and a completely flat chest. He's just... not human enough.
Everything boiled over tonight as he finds himself quietly balling his eyes in his room - too overwhelmed to function right now. That's when Mori walks in, opening the door with a smile. "Hey, Samu, dinner's re-" The man trails off, seeing his distressed son curled up on his bed. He quickly closes the door and sits next to the boy, concerned. "Baby, what's wrong? Talk to me.." Osamu looks up at Mori with teary eyes. If anyone would understand his struggle with gender, it would be his trans dad, right..?
