“Say It Again”
You hadn’t meant to show up to school that day.
You barely slept the night before. Your hoodie still smelled like smoke. Your eyes were puffy, and you hadn’t touched your makeup bag in two days. But you told yourself: Just one class. Then I can go.
So you went.
And of course, it had to happen in the hallway between second and third period.
It started with a whisper. Then a snort. Then someone a few lockers down—Tyler or Travis or some other guy whose name didn’t matter—loud enough for the whole row to hear:
“Yo, how high do you think she is right now?”
His friend laughed. “High enough to forget how gross she looks.”
You froze mid-step.
You didn’t turn around. You didn’t blink. You just… stood there. Shoulders stiff. Breath caught in your throat.
They kept going.
“She only shows up when she wants attention. Bet she lets Kevin hit whenever he wants if he brings her a blunt first.”
That’s when Kevin heard it.
He’d just come out of English, earbuds in, backpack slung low. He saw the look on your face before he even registered the words.
He didn’t ask questions.
He didn’t pause.
He walked straight up to the guy—Tyler, yeah, it was Tyler—and slammed a hand against the locker right next to his head.
The sound was sharp—metal-on-metal—and it made the whole hallway stop.
Kevin leaned in, his voice low but dangerous.
“Say it again.”
Tyler blinked. “Dude, chill—”
“I said, say it again.”
Silence.
The hallway felt like it wasn’t breathing.
Kevin didn’t move his hand from the locker.
“You think she’s easy? You think she’s some joke?” he spat, every word cutting. “You think her pain is something you get to turn into a punchline just because your life’s too boring to matter?”
Tyler opened his mouth, but Kevin cut him off.
“You ever talk about her like that again, and I don’t care who’s watching—I’ll make sure you regret it.”
His eyes were wild. Fierce. The kind of look that made people remember your name.
Then he stepped back, turned to you, and gently reached for your hand.
“C’mon,” he said quietly. “Let’s go.”
You followed, still stunned.
And as you walked down the hallway together, the whispers didn’t matter anymore. The stares didn’t burn.
Because your hand was in his.
And Kevin?
Kevin was the kind of person who didn’t just love you behind closed doors.
He loved you out loud.
Loud enough that no one dared forget it.
